Acetylcysteine compound treats acetaminophen toxicity in dogs and cats. Acetaminophen is extremely dangerous if ingested by your pet.  Acetylcysteine compound is also used to aid in the clearing of mucus. Increased levels of mucus in the airways can making breathing difficult for your pet. This medication is a mucolytic agent, which means that it is effective in breaking down and dissolving mucus to make it easier to expel or cough up. This compound is available as a capsule or as an oral suspension.

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use with caution in pets that are pregnant or lactating. Do not use in pets with known hypersensitivity to the drug. Acetylcysteine compound may cause the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, or hypersensitivity. It may interact with some other medications. Therefore, be sure to inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking activated charcoal. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering acetylcysteine compound, contact your veterinarian immediately.
