Acyclovir compound is an antiviral medication. It treats the Herpes virus in small animals. It also  treats Pacheco’s disease in birds. This compound works by inhibiting viral DNA replication. It is an extra-label drug used by veterinarians. Acyclovir compound is available in a capsule and in an oral suspension.

Acyclovir Compound Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label.  Shake suspension well before use. Complete the entire prescription, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration of administration vary depending on the condition being treated and response to treatment.

Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Acyclovir Compound Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use acyclovir compound with extreme caution in cats. Use with caution in pets suffering from dehydration, renal dysfunction, and neurologic disorders as well as in pets that are pregnant or nursing. Complete blood count should be monitored during treatment period. Acyclovir compound may cause gastrointestinal disturbances. This compound can also interact with some other medications. Therefore, be sure to inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. Do not use this medication in pets with a known hypersensitivity to acyclovir.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Although adverse or more serious side effects are rare, they can occur. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving acyclovir, contact your veterinarian immediately.
