Advantage Multi for Dogs Basics

Advantage Multi is available by prescription only. It is used to prevent a variety of internal and external parasites including heartworms, fleas, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. The active ingredients are imidacloprid and moxidectin.  Imidacloprid is an insecticidal agent that acts on the central nervous system of fleas, causing paralysis and death. Moxidectin is a parasite control drug that disrupts the nerve transmission of heartworms and intestinal worms. It also leads to insect paralysis and death. This product is safe to use in collie breeds and collie mixed breeds. Advantage Multi for Dogs is available in different sizes according to your dog’s weight:

  • 3 to 9 pounds (green box)
  • 9.1 to 20 pounds (teal box)
  • 20.1 to 55 pounds (red box)
  • 55.1 to 88 pounds (blue box)
  • 88.1 to 110 pounds (brown box)

Advantage Multi for Dogs Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label.Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Apply contents of tube to the skin between the shoulder blades. Be sure to empty the contents of the entire tube in the same spot around the shoulder blades. Administer once a month.

Advantage Multi for Dogs Dosage

  • 3-9  lbs (green box) – Apply one 0.4 mL tube between the shoulder blades once monthly.
  • 9.1-20 lbs (teal box) – Apply one 1 mL tube between the shoulder blades once monthly.
  • 20.1-55 lbs (red box) – Apply one 2.5 mL tube between the shoulder blades once monthly.
  • 55.1 -88 lbs (blue box) – Apply one 4 mL tube between the shoulder blades once monthly.
  • 88-110 lbs (brown box) – Apply one 5 mL tube between the shoulder blades once monthly.
  • Over 110 lbs – Use an appropriate combination of tubes. Apply between the shoulder blades once monthly.

Advantage Multi for Dogs Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in puppies less than 7 weeks of age or dogs less than 3 pounds. Do not use in any animal that has shown a hypersensitivity or allergy to imidacloprid or moxidectin. Use with caution in dogs that are underweight, pregnant, nursing, debilitated, or geriatric.  The bitter taste of Advantage Multi may cause some dogs to drool if ingested. This medication should only be used in dogs after a heartworm test has been performed with negative results. Administration of Advantage Multi to a heartworm-positive dog can lead to a potentially severe shock-like reaction. The application site may appear oily for up to 24 hours.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of a more serious side effect, seek veterinary attention immediately. Some common signs of an allergic reaction or serious side effect are facial swelling, sudden onset of diarrhea or vomiting, shock, seizures, and pale gums. In the case of a missed dose of Advantage Multi for Dogs, give it as soon as you remember or wait until it is time to give the next dose. Do not give a double dose of this product.
