Albuterol Sulfate Basics

Albuterol sulfate requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is an extra-label drug used in veterinary medicine. This medication effectively treats bronchoconstriction. Typically, it is used in cats and horses, however, it may be used in dogs as well. Albuterol sulfate comes in two strengths:

  • 0.083%, 2.5 mg / 3 mL
  • 0.5%, 5 mg / 1 mL

Albuterol Sulfate Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Use this medication with an inhalation mask, such as AeroDawg or AeroKat. Shake suspensions well before use. Do not puncture the albuterol sulfate inhaler. Dosage depends on the condition being treated and response to the medication prescribed. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Albuterol Sulfate Warnings 

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use with caution in pets also suffering from arrhythmias, diabetes, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, and seizure disorders. Also use with caution in pregnant animals. Albuterol sulfate may interact with some other medications. Therefore, be sure to inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking antihistamines, beta andrenergic blockers, digoxin, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Do not administer this medicaiton within 2 weeks of giving an MAOI. Do not store near extreme heat or open flame. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while using this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately. 

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

While adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, they can occur. Seek immediate veterinary attention in the case of a more serious side effect.
