Amantadine is most commonly used to treat chronic pain in small animals. It also treats equine influenza in horses. This product is an NMDA antagonist. Therefore, it is effective in blocking NMDA, a receptor that is important in sensation of pain. Amantadine is available in two forms: a capsule and a tablet.
This product requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration of treatment depend on the condition being treated and response to the medication.
Store amantadine at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to amantadine or in those pets with angle closure glaucoma. Use with caution if your pet suffers from congestive heart failure, liver disease, renal disease, or seizure disorders. You should also use with caution in animals that are pregnant or nursing. This drug may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking CNS stimulants, anticholinergic drugs, or urinary acidifiers. This medication may cause gastrointestinal upset such as loose stools, diarrhea, or flatulence. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering amantadine, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects
Overdoses of amantadine can be serious. If you suspect an overdose has occurred, contact your veterinarian immediately.
