Amoxicillin / Clavulanate Potassium Basics
Amoxicillin / Clavulanate Potassium is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It treats soft tissue infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. By combining clavulanic acid and amoxicillin, this medication works on infections that would otherwise be resistant to antibiotics. Clavulanic acid keeps bacteria from breaking the beta-lactam ring necessary for antibiotics like amoxicillin to work. Amoxicillin / Clavulanate Potassium is available in two strengths:
- 500 mg / 125 mg
- 875 mg / 125 mg
This medication requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
Amoxicillin / Clavulanate Potassium Directions
Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. It is best to administer this medication one hour before or two hours after a meal. Doses may be given with a meal, however, if stomach upset occurs. Do not stop giving this medication until you have completed the entire prescription. Failure to complete antibiotic prescriptions can result in an increased risk for antibiotic resistant bacteria.
