Amoxicillin Basics

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic. It treats and prevents a wide variety of bacterial infections, including skin and soft-tissue infections, upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, gastrointestinal infections, bladder infections, and dental infections. This medication fights off bacteria by inhibiting cell wall formation of bacterial cells, thus causing them to die.

Amoxicillin requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It comes in a capsule, tablet, or oral suspension.

Amoxicillin Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Allow your pet access to plenty of water during treatment. Amoxicillin can be given with or without food.

Store amoxicillin at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Amoxicillin Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets with a known hypersensitivity to any penicillin derivative or cephalosporin. Use with caution in pets suffering from kidney disease, stomach disease, or intestinal disease. Amoxicillin may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking allopurinol, other antibiotics, probenecid, chloramphenicol or tetracycline.

In the case of a missed dose of amoxicillin, give it as soon as you remember or wait until it is time to give the next dose. Do not give a double dose of this medication. In the case of an overdose, seek attention from your veterinarian. Symptoms of an overdose may include muscle spasms, weakness, confusion, seizures, or agitation. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering amoxicillin, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Allergic reactions can occur with amoxicillin and can be serious. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect that your pet is having an allergic reaction to this medication.
