Atopica for Dogs Basics
Atopica for Dogs is an immunosuppressant drug used in cats and dogs. It treats animals suffering from autoimmune disorders, including atopic dermatitis, immune mediated hemolytic anemia, perineal fistula, and rejections after organ transplants. This medication affects calcium-ion uptake in lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are the white blood cells responsible for the body’s immune system response.
Atopica requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in four different capsule sizes: 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.
Atopica for Dogs Directions
Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Administer this medication two (2) hours before or after feeding. In addition, ensure that your pet has access to plenty of water throughout treatment.
Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.
Atopica for Dogs Warnings
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. This medication should not be used in dogs less than 6 months of age and weighing less than 4 pounds. It also should not be used in cats less than 6 months of age and weighing less than 3 pounds. Do not give this medication to pets suffering from a known hypersensitivity to cyclosporine, certain blood disorders, kidney damage, or stomach ulcers. Use with caution in pregnant animals. Atopica may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your your veterinarian if your pet is taking any other medications. Prolonged use of cyclosporines can result in bacterial or fungal infections. Long-term use can also promote the development of cancers. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving Atopica, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects
Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, however, they can occur. In the case of a more serious side effect, seek immediate veterinary attention. Common signs of adverse reactions are hives, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fever, painful urination, or runny nose.
