Description

Carprofen Basics

Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) similar to aspirin and ibuprofen. It is the generic equivalent of Rimadyl. This medication is used to treat limping or lameness, decreased activity or exercise, stiffness, decreased movement of joints, and pain following surgery. Like other NSAIDs, it works by inhibiting the formation of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals in the body that promote inflammation, pain, and fever, increase blood clotting, and protect the lining of the stomach from damaging acids.

Carprofen requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available as a caplet or as a chewable tablet.

Duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and development of any adverse effects. Give this medication with food to prevent upset stomach.
