Cisapride Compound Basics

Cisapride Compound treats chronic constipation, megacolon, megaesophagus, and acid reflux disease. It belongs to the benzamide class of drugs. Benzamide drugs are used as a motility enhancement drug in dogs and cats. Motility disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are a common clinical problem in companion animals. The muscles in the stomach contract to pass food at a certain pace known as motility. Motility can be inconsistent or abnormal due to a number of disorders. Reduced motility leads to a build-up of food in the stomach which causes bloating and nausea. Cisapride increases the release of acetylcholine, which in turn stimulates the smooth muscle in the digestive tract to contract more frequently.

Cisapride Compound requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available as a capsule, oral suspension, tiny tablet, and transdermal ear cream. Please note that this compound can only be dispensed in 180 day maximum supply quantities.
