Clarithromycin is an antibiotic used in dogs, cats, and foals. It treats helicobacter in dogs and cats and rhodococcus in foals. This compound requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in a capsule and an oral suspension.

Clarithromycin Compound Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Shake oral suspensions well before use. Give this medication with food to prevent stomach upset. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration of treatment depend on the condition being treated and response to the medication.

Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Clarithromycin Compound Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to clarithromycin. Use with caution in pets that are pregnant or lactating. Use in foals only; do not use in adult horses or ponies. Clarithromycin may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking cisapride, digoxin, or omeprazole.  If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving clarithromycin, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, however, they can occur. In the case of a more serious reaction, seek immediate veterinary attention.
