Desmopressin Acetate Basics

Desmopressin Acetate treats diabetes insipidus and Von Willebrand’s disease. Originally a human medication, desmopressin is approved for extra-label use in veterinary medicine. It is an anti-diuretic that increases water re-absorption, decreasing urine production.

Desmopressin Acetate requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in 0.1mg and 0.2mg tablets, as well as a 0.01% 5mL nasal spray.

Desmopressin Acetate Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian and always follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Depending on the condition being treated and response to the medication, dosage and duration of treatment vary. Desmopressin comes in a human nasal spray, but, instead, apply drops to the conjunctival sac just below the eye of your pet. Discard nasal spray 30 days after opening.

Store tablets at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Refrigerate desmopressin nasal spray.

Desmopressin Acetate Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use desmopressin with caution if your pet is pregnant or is taking chlorpropamide.  Desmopressin Acetate may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. Overdoses may lead to fluid retention. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.
