Methimazole Compound Basics
Methimazole is an anti-thyroid agent. The thyroid gland takes in iodine that is digested and turned into the thyroid hormones T4 and T3. The thyroid hormone is responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism. When the thyroid gland produces too much T3 and T4, weight loss, abnormal appetite, and heart problems occur. High levels of T3 and T4 are fairly common in older cats. Methimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland. Methimazole works by blocking iodine’s entry to the thyroid gland. Without iodine, the thyroid gland cannot produce T4 and T3.
