Metronidazole Compound Basics

Metronidazole Compound is an antibiotic. It effectively fights anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites associated with the intestines, vaginal tract, mouth, bones and joints. This compound requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in a capsule, chewable, tiny tablet, and oral suspension.

Metronidazole Compound Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Dose and duration of administration depend on the condition being treated and response to treatment. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian.

Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Shake oral suspensions well before use.

Metronidazole Compound Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not administer to any animal with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to metronidazole, and do not use in animals that are nursing or pregnant. Use with caution in animals with liver disease. Metronidazole will not treat a vaginal yeast infection.Metronidazole can negatively interact with other medications, so inform your veterinarian of any additional medications your pet may be taking. Alert your veterinarian if your pet has watery or bloody diarrhea. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving metronidazole, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, however, they can occur. In the case of a more serious reaction, seek veterinary attention immediately. Some common signs of an adverse reaction or serious side effect are hives, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, watery or bloody diarrhea, seizures, sores inside of mouth, or fever.
