Penicillin G Basics
Penicillin G is available by prescription only. Penicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that works by inhibiting the formation of the bacterial cell wall. Penicillin G is used to treat Gram positive aerobic bacteria, Gram negative aerobic bacteria, S. equi infection of the guttural pouch/ strangles, and Botulism.

Penicillin G Warnings
Keep out of reach of children and pets. Use with caution in pets with known hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics. Use with caution in pregnant animals. Do not use for more than 7 days in dairy or beef cows, sheep, or pigs. Do not use for more than 5 days in lactating dairy cows. Ask your veterinarian before use if your pet is taking other antibiotics. Complete your prescription in full. Do not stop giving antibiotics before the end of the prescription unless instructed to do so by your veterinarian.

Penicillin G Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store Penicillin G at room temperature. Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Duration of administration depends on the condition being treated and the response to the medication and development of any adverse effects. Dosage depends on species and condition being treated. Consult your veterinarian for dosage information.

Penicillin G should not be used in animals that are allergic to:

  • – Penicillin
  • – Sensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics (cephalosporin)

Use of this drug is restricted to under the use of or by order of a licensed veterinarian. Discuss with your veterinarian if your horse is pregnant, nursing, or intend to breed.

Side effects associated with penicillin are rare and usually are not serious. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving Penicillin G, however, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Adverse Reactions
Adverse reactions can occur with penicillin use. If you believe your pet may be having an allergic reaction to penicillin, contact your veterinarian immediately.
