Phenylbutazone Compound Basics
Phenylbutazone is available by prescription only. Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat chronic arthritis and pain following surgery in horses. Phenylbutazone is used to treat pain and inflammation, limping or lameness, decreased activity or exercise, stiffness, decreased movement of joints, and pain following surgery. Like other NSAIDs, phenylbutazone works by inhibiting the formation of prostaglandins.
Phenylbutazone Compound Warnings
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Phenylbutazone is not for use in cats. Use with caution in horses that are pregnant. Use with caution is ponies and foals. Use with caution if your horse has shown sensitivity to NSAIDs. Do not use phenylbutazone in pets who also suffer from blood disorders, bone disorders, GI ulcers, heart disease, liver disease, or kidney disease. Phenylbutazone may interact with some other medications. Inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking, especially corticosteroids, digoxin, furosemide, other NSAIDs, or penicillin G. Store at room temperature. Store protected from light and moisture.
Phenylbutazone Compound Directions
Use as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store phenylbutazone powder at room temperature. Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Phenylbutazone is for use in horses only. Do not give more than 4 g of phenylbutazone daily. Allow horses access to plenty of water while giving phenylbutazone powder.
If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your horse while giving phenylbutazone powder, contact your veterinarian immediately.
