Piroxicam Basics

Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that treats bladder cancer, various types of carcinoma, and pain and inflammation from joint disease. NSAIDs work by inhibiting prostaglandins to treat inflammation. Piroxicam is available for extra-label use in veterinary medicine.

This medication requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in 10mg and 20mg capsules.

Piroxicam Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian and follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration depend on the condition being treated and response to the medication. Give capsules with food.

Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Piroxicam Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use with caution in cats and in pets who are pregnant or nursing. Do not use in pets with known hypersensitivity to NSAIDs. Use with caution in pets who suffer from GI ulcers, liver disease, or renal disease. Piroxicam may interact with other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking, especially corticosteroids, digoxin, furosemide, and other NSAIDs. Store at room temperature and away from light. If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving piroxicam, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, however, they can occur. GI ulceration and bleeding can occur with piroxicam. If you notice any unusual bleeding or adverse reactions, contact your veterinarian immediately.
