Spironolactone is available by prescription only. Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), potassium deficiency, and hyperaldosteronism. Spironolactone works by increasing the levels of water excreted by the kidneys.

Spironolactone requires a prescription from your veterinarian. Spironolactone is used to treat congestive heart failure (CHF), edema, and hypertension. Unlike many other diuretics, spironolactone does not cause loss of potassium in the blood. Spironolactone compound comes in an oral suspension. Spironolactone must be given consistently in order to effectively manage symptoms

Spironolactone Compound Warnings
Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to spironolactone. Do not use in animals that are pregnant or lactating, have high potassium levels in the blood, suffer from hypoadrenocorticism, or suffer from Cushing’s disease and are taking the medication mitotane. Use caution when administering to animals with liver or kidney disease. Be sure to discuss all other medications and supplements your pet is taking with your veterinarian. Spironolactone will cause your pet to urinate more frequently. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Spironolactone Compound Directions
Use as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store spironolactone at room temperature. Be sure to give medication consistently in order to effectively manage symptoms. Give spironolactone with food and water to lessen stomach upset.

Allergic Reactions and Serious Side Effects
Allergic reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of an allergic reaction or a serious side effect you should stop spironolactone treatment and seek veterinary attention. Some common signs of allergic reactions and more serious side effects are facial swelling, hives, sudden onset of diarrhea, seizures, coma, or pale gums.
