Trazodone is an anti-depressant medication that treats behavioral disorders is dogs. It is most commonly used as an anti-anxiety agent. More specifically, it treats separation anxiety and various fear related behaviors. This medication is a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI). Therefore, it increases serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical that facilitates transmission of messages among brain cells.
Trazodone requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in a 100mg tablet.
Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration of administration depend on the condition being treated and response to the medication.
Store at room temperature protected from light and moisture.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to trazodone. Use with caution in pets suffering from cardiac, hepatic, or renal diseases. Also use with caution in pets that are pregnant or lactating. This drug may interact with some other medications. Therefore, be sure to inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking MAO inhibitors, such as selegiline or amitraz. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.
