Vetmedin Basics

Vetmedin, or pimobendan, manages congestive heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy (enlarged, weakened heart) in dogs. The medication opens up the blood vessels, allowing the heart to beat more efficiently. As a result, Vetmedin greatly improves the quality of life in dogs suffering from heart failure.

Vetmedin requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It comes in four different strengths of beef-flavored chewable tablets: 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg.

Vetmedin Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration of treatment depend on the condition being treated and response to the medication. For best results, give 1 hour before food.

Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Vetmedin Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use in dogs only. Also, do not use in dogs that are less than 6 months of age or in dogs that are pregnant or lactating. Avoid use in dogs suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, or heart conditions causing an increase in cardiac output.

Pimobendan may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking, especially if your pet is currently taking verapamil, theophylline, pentoxiphylline, or propranolol. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.
