Zonisamide Basics

Zonisamide treats epilepsy and other seizure disorders in dogs and cats. The exact mechanism of this medication is unknown, however, it is believed to effectively block sodium and calcium channels. As a result, zonisamide reduces the risk of epileptic seizures and better manages those seizures that do occur.

Zonisamide requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It comes in the following strengths: 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg.

Zonisamide Directions

Use this medication as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Dosage and length of treatment depend on the condition being treated and your pet’s response to the medication. You may give this medication with or without food, however, administering with food decreases the chances of stomach upset. Be sure to gradually decrease treatment of this medication; stopping treatment suddenly can cause serious side effects.

Store tablets at room temperature protected from light and moisture.

Zonisamide Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets that are pregnant or nursing, as administering this medication to pregnant pets can result in birth defects. Do not use in pets with known allergies to sulfa drugs. Wean your pet off of zonisamide gradually; stopping treatment suddenly could cause an increase in seizures. Common side effects while administering this medication include diarrhea, vomiting, sedation, ataxia, and anorexia. Finally, if you notice these or any other behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Adverse Reactions and Serious Side Effects

Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, however, they can occur. In the case of a more serious side effect, seek immediate veterinary attention.
